How does the Short-Term Accommodation work?

When you must temporarily leave your home, short-term housing is there to help. This may be done as a "respite" for caregivers, or it may be done to assist you if your regular support system is temporarily unavailable. You can take a break and have the opportunity to try new activities, meet new people, or learn new skills when you spend a short time away from home.

What is included in temporary housing?

Contrary to its name, short-term housing includes more than simply the place you reside; it also consists of the assistance you get from the staff. Thus, it also has:

Activities you and the caregiver agree on regarding personal care and meals. Actions may involve art therapy, depending on the practitioner, among other things.

Accommodations for temporary use in your NDIS plan

The NDIS funds short-term housings under the Core Support category "Assistance with Daily Living." Depending on the type of assistance you need, the informal support you have, your living environment, and your objectives, the NDIS will determine if short-term housing is acceptable and essential for you (and the number of short-term housing funds you might get in your plan).

Examples include

  • Someone with high support requires a break from informal assistance (such as a family member) (respite care). This contributes to the sustainability of casual servcasualeone who aspires to become more independent and uses the time away from their typical support system to practise their abilities in a new setting.
  • A teen who would gain from attending a school vacation camp has aspirations of expanding their community involvement.
  • A teen who would gain from attending a school vacation camp has aspirations of expanding their community involvement.

Typically, the NDIS will only cover up to 28 days of temporary housing each year. Funding for short-term housing is flexible, so you may decide whether to use it all at once or spread it over ar.

The NDIS Price Guide includes regular prices for short-term housing.

Generally speaking, financing is for a group fee, so unless you require individual help due to your handicap, you can share support with others. If there is money in your preliminary budget already, you can spend it on short-ton accommodation. If you require longer-term accommodation help, the NDIA may pay for further support, such as medium-term housing.

Including temporary housing in your strategy

Ask your NDIS Short-Term Accommodation in Melbourne or LAC during your planning meeting or review whether you want your plan to include funds for temporary housing. It would help if you described how much help you require at this meeting and provided as much "proof" as possible. The NDIS wants to see a lot of documentation before supporting your temporary housing. This might be a letter from your informal support person outlining their position and why respite care would be beneficial to them, or it could be a report from a therapist outlining how short-term housing could assist you.

You might also describe how being in temporary housing can help you achieve your objectives, for instance, if you want to become more independent or engage in society more. You may provide details that support the NDIS to better comprehend your circumstances and why using temporary accommodation is acceptable and required for you.

Locating a provider of temporary housing

There are several specialised short-term lodging providers, ranging from modest residences to more substantial, hotel-style settings. They may provide quite different services and assistance. Spend some time learning about what is available and which STA providers can best suit your individual assistance needs. NDIS Short-Term accommodation in Melbourne offers some advice on how to locate and pick service providers.

Non-registered providers are a choice if you have a plan manager, but occasionally they are not as cost-effective as they would seem. This is because you would have to pay more for support, which is typically not included. When you are comparing pricing, be sure to keep this in mind. If you wish to use non-registered accommodations, keep in mind that the NDIS considers value for money, so you must be able to demonstrate that the level of accommodations you've selected is necessary for your circumstance. It could be challenging to justify the need for a five-star resort... and utilising a large portion of your funds for lodging might significantly affect your budget.

Using the money allotted for transitory housing

Utilising your short-term housing budget with a specialised provider who bundles your lodging, food, care/support, and activities into one bill is the best and most straightforward option. For short-term housing, however, it is still allowed to claim expenses for lodging, food, and activities individually as long as they don't exceed the daily limits.

Support staff housing may be covered under short-term housing up to the maximum daily cost. However, if you travel with unofficial helpers, you can only file a claim for your proportion of the lodging under short-term lodging. Holidays are not the purpose of short-term housing; the assistance must be based on your condition. It's a good idea to have some supporting documentation on hand in case you need to explain why you spent your money in the manner you did and if the assistance will enable you to accomplish your goals and engage in the community.
